Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay discovered her love for art through her grandmother Denise. Aunt Denise, who worked night shifts as a nurse, allowed her to explore art and literature as well as the theater in the daylight. DuVernay fell in love with the 1961 movie West Side Story after her aunt introduced the film to DuVernay. DuVernay discovered through experience that art is a great vehicle to engage in political activism. DuVernay was trained by her mother who had a social conscience and pushed DuVernay to show her creativity through art. While DuVernay grew up in Compton with her family she was a summer resident living in Lowndes County Alabama where her parents lived for many generations. Her father recalled watching the Civil Rights Movement's historic march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. The time spent in Selma, Alabama during the summer, would later inspire her to write a script for a film based on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as the Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay was a graduate from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in 1990. In the year 1990 she graduated from the Saint Joseph High School located in Lakewood CA. As studying, DuVernay began to consider producing for broadcast journalism. She began her career as an assistant for CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was assigned to the look-out and search for the house for a specific member of the Jury. Her tasks to accomplish left her unsatisfied and so, after deciding to not pursue journalism, she moved on into the industry of publicity. DuVernay found a job immediately out college, as a publicist in the young age of a studio. In this role, she launched her own PR company called The DuVernay Agency in 1999. Apart from PR, the agency launched a number of marketing and lifestyle platforms, such as the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
